The most famous of the William Shakespeare images and
generally thought to be the most authentic - the engraving by
Martin Droeshout which featured on the title page of the
First Folio of William Shakespeare'splays
made available here on t-shirts, posters, prints, greeting
cards and gifts.
The actual title of the First Folio is "Mr.
William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies."
The Droeshout engraving of William Shakespeare was
commissioned by the powerful Pembroke family on behalf
of the Burbages, Ben Jonson, John Hemminge
and Henry Condell who commissioned the publishing of the
First Folio. When James Burbage wrote to the Earl
of Pembroke requesting their financial support for the work,
he referred to Shakespeare as "the man they all knew,
the former actor and businessman from Stratford..."
This is a cropped version of the famous image.
