Elizabeth I (born: 7 September 1533) was Queen of
England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death
on 24 March, 1603. Sometimes referred to as The Virgin Queen,
Gloriana, or Good Queen Bess, Elizabeth the First
was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty, succeeding
her half-sister, Mary Tudor.
It is from Elizabeth' the First's reign that we get
the period known as the Elizabethan era. Under her rule,
amongst many other achievements, the theatre flourished
and many playwrights, such as William Shakespeare
and Christopher Marlowe began to form modern theatre
as we know it today. Despite having a sometimes controversial
reign, Elizabeth the First proved to be one of the most
popular monarchs in English or British history,
ruling for 45 years and being universally mourned by her people
on her death.
